Have been wanting to get power in the camper for sometime and think about what and how we want it set up. Shying of buying a newer camper, for what we want is going to take a bit of reworking a few things to hardwire the camper with it's own power supply so we ended up going portable and bought an Arkpak. Had looked at the different battery packs on and off for a while but it wasn't till I started looking a bit closer the new shape Arkpak come in a few different models. The AP615, 715 and the 730 with a new one the AP735 due out later this year. Each new one offers a bit more than the other.

Anhow we got the AP730, dropped a 100 amp hr AGM battery into so now we should be good to go camping in a couple of weeks. Will let you know how it goes.

Well we have made a bit of a sharp turn on things camping.

After having half a dozen odd tents and now two Cub campers, Kamparoo and a Supamatic Off Road. With our respective medical problems progressing with our age we are finding we are not enjoying the campers as much as we would like and therefore not being used as they should. We have been considering our options for a little while and while looking at a hybrid camper for touring we have also been looking at caravans for more local longer stays.

After this Christmas New Year period we reached a stage where we decided to take action and put the Cub for sale and began seriously looking for an alternate. Due to our medical needs and what we otherwise wanted, it narrowed down what we were looking for and what would suit us best. Mobility issues played a big role in our choice, including the single beds. Also as I have back problems and prefer a firmer bed, Jan prefers a soft bed, which again led us to single beds.

Anyhow this is what we got. Finally brought it back home last week. Bit of a blank canvas which is good as there are a few things we want to do to it. Have ordered custom mattresses for the beds and booked the van into get some work done on it.

Been busy on the van the last couple of days.

Since getting the van there were a couple of things we wanted done first up.
Ordered new mattresses for us. For our respective needs and to fit the narrower the a 'normal' single bed they are a custom made mattress. Hopefully they should be here this week or maybe next week. Just a waiting game.

The in laws visited for a couple of days after we got the van home, so they conveniently stayed in the van for us. That is when we discovered the fridge was not working, on gas or 240. We even got the level out and checked to make sure it was perfectly level, still nothing. Oh well the plan was to replace it with a 12V one anyhow.

Took the van into Abco to do some gas line work for us. With the two 9kg bottles on the draw bar there was just the one flexible hose to one bottle only and where the flexible hose connected to the gas pipe was cable tied to the lug for the brake line. Asked for that to be sorted and a T piece to both bottles. Also asked for a gas outlet on the near side of the van for future bbq outdoor kitchen when set up for longer stays. The work was all done and had a good chat to the guy that did the work. He said he did a quick test on the fridge and could not get it working. Said he got it to light but no worky. He got the hot plates to work so the gas line works.

Anyhow a few before and after shots.

After a very informative chat we decided with the camper trailer sold to get a few things done to the van we wanted. Was going to be cheaper by the looks of things to hit the internet to buy the items fit them ourselves and get them to do either the gas plumbing or electrics accordingly.

first up was the fridge. Looking around the new upright 12V Evakool fridge/freezers seem to be the best. We had hoped for one of the larger fridge/freezers to fit opposite the kitchen but after running the tape measure over everything we found that the two larger ones were not going to fit without some major renovations and reconstruction works. After reconsidering what we have, including the 60 litre Trailblaza in the 80 we settled on replacing the old 3 way fridge with the Evakool 110 litre fridge/freezer.

Out with the old

Image

My nemises, wiring, trying to find what they have previously piggy backed onto the wiring to the fridge, think it is 12 wiring to a fan and a water pump. Not sure.

Image

Markout what needs to be cut out for the new fridge which is taller but slimmer.

Image

A switch which appears to be for a 12v water pump, needs to move out of the way

With the old fridge out there is always a job for Jan.

To try and reduce further mud wasps, fly screen mesh behind the air vents for the fridge, Jan's idea.

Easy job, table removed

Image

All going well will pick up a new table leg which will still allow us the open room of having no table when not needed.

More van things arrived
